Which bathroom generation do you belong to?

The baby boomers and Generation Z are worlds apart; for example, when it comes to their relationship with money, their preferred means of communication or who their idols are. A glimpse into bathrooms from different eras also shows there are crucial differences between them.

And what about today?

Baby boomers

Born 1950–1965

Back when running cold and hot water was not a given, this is what a lot of bathrooms looked like in the 1960s. The bathroom was a purely functional room in which everything you needed was squeezed into a small space.

Many baby boomers were born at a time when many houses still did not have a bathtub

Generation X

Born 1966–1980

Then the seventies rolled along, bringing colour into the bathroom. Whether bahama beige, mustard yellow or ruby red – the most important thing was to have a specific colour scheme.

Colourful ceramics, actuator plates and wall-hung WCs were all the rage in the seventies

Generation Y

Born 1981–1994

The 1980s were characterised by design, which had to be different and show your individuality. The functionality of everyday objects was of less importance. Individuality was in great demand in bathrooms – you could show yours by using playful graphic elements in tiles, for example.

A bathroom like this with a separate shower and playful colour accents in the tiles was very fashionable

Generation Z

Born after 1995

The standard of living rose significantly and it became important to have light, inviting spaces. If you were able to afford it, more space was dedicated to the bathroom and more energy went into designing it.

In the 1990s, tranquil design returned – which is why bathrooms became slightly larger

And what about today?

And what about today?

Simple and relaxed design is the name of the game today. People do not just seek added value in the visible elements, but also in the elements that are hidden away – functional additional benefits are what make the difference between good design and great design.
